What is it Like to Build a Successful Relationship with a Gallery?

Those of you who have been following reddotblog for some time probably know that I opened Xanadu Gallery in 2001. Over the last 14 years, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to build relationships with amazing artists and art collectors. I’ve been privileged to place millions of dollars worth of art with collectors – April 28, 2015 at 1251PMenriching their lives while at the same time helping artists turn their passion into successful careers.

I love the work I do! Each day is a new adventure. I get to meet people from all over the world, and I get to share my passion for art with them. I get to see the power art has to bring joy and beauty into people’s lives.

What could be better?!

What many people don’t see or appreciate is the incredible amount of work that goes on behind the scenes in a gallery in order to make sales happen.It’s not as simple as putting some art up on the wall, opening your doors and racking up the sales. Creating a successful gallery requires planning, ambition and a lot of hard work!

This Year’s Mentorship is Different

This will show1be the third year of our mentorship program. This year is going to be a little different than the last two years. With the first two Mentorship artists, I worked to help them prepare themselves for gallery representation. We worked on artistic consistency and branding, we zeroed in on appropriate pricing and we worked on creating effective portfolios, along with many other important principles.

We will be doing all of this again with this year’s Mentorship artist, but this year the focus is going to shift to show you how to build success as you work with a gallery.

This year’s Mentorship, like past ones, will culminate in a show for the Mentorship artist at Xanadu Gallery in Scottsdale. This year, however, representation at Xanadu will begin shortly after the launch of the Mentorship program.

The selected artist will be represented as a featured artist during the entire 2015-16 high season at Xanadu. I’ll be working closely with the selected artist to build a collector following for  her/his work.

We’ll be marketing the artist’s work through a variety of avenues and I will show you everything we do in order to generate success for an artist. You’ll get to see how I plan displays for an artist, and what we do to get the artist’s name and artwork out in front of collectors. You’ll watch as we talk to collectors about the artist’s work, and you’ll get to watch the follow up process as we transform interested viewers into collectors.

Everyone who Applies for the Mentorship Wins

As you know, I’ll receive a number of applications for the Xanadu Gallery’s Mentorship, and only one artist can be selected as the Mentorship Artist. The beauty of the Mentorship Program, however, is that everyone who applies gets to follow along! You will get to watch every step of the process in online video sessions.

Because we will be working extensively on marketing the Mentorship artist’s work, you will be able to take the principles and techniques shown during the Mentorship sessions and apply them to your own marketing efforts. For example, I’ll work with the Mentorship artist on all of the following:

  • How to build a successful mailing list, and email list, and how to keep in touch with your followers to generate more sales.
  • How to find new customers in the real world, online, and through social media.
  • How to engage customers at a deeper level with your art.
  • How to follow up with customers so that you can transform them from lookers into buyers.
  • How to create an engaging biography.
  • How to craft artwork narratives to teach collectors about your work
  • Simple, yet compelling video production to create multi-media experiences for your buyers

And much, much more. These are all principles that you can take and apply to your art business, whether you are the selected artist, or are following along in the Mentorship sessions.

In addition, you will learn about how the artist/gallery relationship works. You will see:

  • How gallery artists are selected
  • How the relationship begins
  • What paperwork is involved in the artist/gallery relationship
  • How gallery’s plan displays
  • The follow-up and sales process
  • How artists are paid for sales
  • How shows are planned and prepared for
  • How catalogs and invitations are conceived, planned and created
  • How galleries ship artwork to clients

    I’m just at the beginning of building a body of work and I’m out of state so I’m not sure that I would be an appropriate candidate for this amazing Mentorship. However, will you be posting this process on the blog or would I need to still apply to receive a separate site to follow along? Please let me know because this all sounds like amazing information that would a huge help to me as I move forward.
